Some thoughts on tonight’s How I Met Your Mother after the break. Watch out for the goat turd.

I’m usually a big fan of this show’s use of the Unreliable Narrator. The Pineapple Incident let us change our perspective on the night several times, which made that episode that much more enjoyable. The problem with tonight’s goat story is that they Future Ted being wrong was used as a way to delay the goat story, not improve it. I felt almost cheated, because we only got half a Goat Story, which was all buildup and no payoff. (OK, some payoff. Ted and Robin seem to be living together at this time next year, though I think it will be strictly platonic as roommates.) I’ve been waiting on this goat story for 2 years, and more so since I re-watched season 1 a few months ago. I just wished there had been more payoff.

With that out of the way, I liked the Barney/Robin side of the story. Once again we see how badly Barney can break down (The Yips, anyone?) when things go crazy, and Robin got to be all level headed and perfectly OK with the situation. For a while. The show is always great when they play with time, and showing the second half of the scene in Ted’s apartment worked well. The payoff of Marshall opening the beer and walking out soaked was classic. I think Ted handled Robin perfectly. There’s really no need to get very mad at her, and Ted would just come out looking badly from the whole situation.

Barney’s a different story. I’m sad that Ted “dumped” him, but you really can’t blame him for that. Barney broke the Bro Code, which his ancestor wrote (Anyone else know it would be “Barnabus Stinson”?). I just hope this won’t last for very long. Ted and Barney aren’t the greatest duo, but some good old fashioned Have You Met Ted is always nice to see. There’s a place open for Barney’s Best Bro, which I hope Robin steps into. Zip, Zip, Zip really showed how well they can work together. I thought that that’s where this Robin/Barney relationship was going now, but that will have to wait. I still think it’s coming, though.

I love this show and episode so much I designed some products (t-shirts, beer mugs, and hat) based off it. Check them out and let me know what you think http://www.zazzle.com/ogbutch.
